Chief Officer Henry T. Wilde had served with Captain Smith aboard the Olympic and Captain Smith specifically requested that Wilde join him for Titanic's maiden voyage. Wilde's joining the Titanic meant the demotion of William Murdoch from Chief Officer to First Officer and Charles Lightoller from First Officer to Second Officer. Prior to sailing on Titanic's maiden voyage, Wilde had voiced misgivings regarding the upcoming voyage in a letter to his sister. After the Titanic struck the iceberg, Chief Officer Wilde and Third Officer Pitman manned the bridge while the other officers saw to mustering the ship's passengers and preparing the ship's lifeboats for launching. Wilde was from Liverpool. Chief Officer Wilde did not survive Titanic's sinking.
