Edward John Smith

Titanic's captain for her maiden voyage was Edward J. Smith, the Commodore of the White Star Line.  Captain Smith was White Star's premiere ship's captain and so popular with wealthy passengers that he was known as the "millionaire's captain."  Captain Smith had previously served on Titanic's sister ship, the Olympic , and was thought to have been planning to retire after his triumphant maiden voyage on the Titanic .   On Titanic's maiden voyage, Captain Smith had been sufficient concerned over the possibility of ice that he delayed Titanic's change of course to the west by a half-hour, thus placing Titanic approximately ten miles south of where her original course would have taken her.

James Cameron's Titanic
Bernard Hill
Bernard Hill played Captain EJ Smith in James Cameron's Titanic. It was an impressive performance which helped the film to become the blockbuster that it is.

Quote: "I cannot imagine any condition which would cause a ship to founder. I cannot conceive of any vital disaster happening to this vessel. Modern shipbuilding has gone beyond that . . ." (On the maiden voyage of the Adriatic in New York, 1907)
