Following the collision, Third Officer Herbert Pitman worked with First Officer Murdoch preparing Titanic's odd-numbered lifeboats for launching. After the Titanic sank, Third Officer Pitman was in command of lifeboats 5 and 7, which were tied together. After the Titanic disaster, Third Officer Pitman remained at sea for the next 35 years, including a period of service on Titanic's sister ship, the Olympic . After retiring to the town of Pitcombe, England, he died in 1961.
