Fifth Officer Harold Lowe was asleep when the Titanic brushed the iceberg and was wakened by the sound of voices outside of his cabin. Lowe was placed in command of Lifeboat 14, containing more than 54 women and children. As the boat was being lowered, Lowe fired his revolver alongside of the Titanic to discourage a number of men in the crowd on deck who appeared ready to jump into the boat. As was the case with the other surviving officers of the Titanic , Fifth Officer Lowe never attained the rank of captain in the merchant service, but did reach the rank of commander in the Royal Navy Reserve during World War I. He eventually left the sea and became active in his North Wales community. He died in 1944.
