Second Officer Charles H. Lightoller was initially Titanic's First Officer and served in that capacity during Titanic's voyage from Belfast to Southampton. However, when Henry T. Wilde was brought on as Titanic's Chief Officer, William Murdoch was demoted to First Officer and Charles Lightoller was demoted to Second Officer.   Before joining the White Star Line, Lightoller had an adventurous life, having been shipwrecked, prospecting for gold in the Yukon and working as a cowboy in the Canadian west.  Second Officer Lightoller was the most senior of Titanic's officers to have survived her sinking.  While he commanded a Royal Navy warship during World War I, Lightoller never attained command of any merchant ship.  During the 1940 evacuation of British and French forces from Dunkirk, Lightoller sailed his personal yacht to France to assist in the evacuation.
